GARDEN CREATION PROCESS

We offer an end-to-end design service, working collaboratively with you from initial concept to completed garden.

The garden creation process is divided into clear stages, and we’ll guide you through each step. Once the design work is complete, we work with experienced, vetted landscape contractors to bring the design to life.

01. CONSULTATION

The process begins with an on-site consultation. This is a chance to get to know each other a little, as we learn all about your aspirations for the garden, gain an initial understanding of your brief and get a general feel for the space itself. Following this we send you a written proposal with the brief, fee structure, and a quote for the Concept Design phase.

02. SURVEY

Before design work starts, a topographical survey is needed. This provides an accurate base plan of the site, recording the location of trees, surfaces, levels and utilities. On small, straightforward sites we may be able to carry out the survey ourselves. If not, we will ask a trusted local surveyor to do one on your behalf. Accuracy at this stage avoids inefficiencies later in the process.

03. CONCEPT DESIGN

We develop a high-level design, to show the proposed layout, character and atmosphere of the space. A 3D model and 2D perspective views help bring the design to life. A moodboard and reference imagery are used to communicate features, materials and key plants. You may also choose to commission CGI photo-realistic renders of the design as an additional service.

04. DEVELOPED DESIGN

Any feedback on the concept is incorporated into a final masterplan. At this stage, we’ll review material samples and ask you to make decisions on these and key structural plants, so that the detailed design work can be completed accurately. If planning permission is required, this typically takes place at this point, and we can manage the submission on your behalf if you wish.

05. DETAILED DESIGN

A set of technical drawings is produced, enabling the landscape contractor to accurately quantify, quote and build the garden. These include a setting-out plan, levels plan, lighting plan and construction detailing for elements such as paving, walling and steps. There will be a separate consultation to agree a plant palette before planting plans are developed. These map every plant and are used for quoting and for setting out.

06. BUILD

We will recommend an experienced, vetted landscape contractor to bring your design to life. During the build phase we will be available for phone calls and site visits to ensure that the work is carried out as specified. You are, of course, welcome to appoint your own landscape contractor, or we will be able to support you through a tender process if helpful.

07. PLANTING

At the end of the build phase, we return to site to manage the installation of the planting. Our plants are sourced from specialist, high-quality wholesale nurseries, and we will coordinate and receive all deliveries. Emma will be there in person on the first day of planting, making subtle adjustments to achieve the best positioning and orientation before planting takes place.

08. AFTER CARE

Gardens are living, evolving spaces, and ongoing care is essential to help plants establish and thrive in their new environment. We will talk you through the care required immediately after planting and on the general maintenance steps we recommend to ensure your garden remains a source of beauty and enjoyment for many years to come.
